Big box gyms aren’t built for everyone—especially not for men and women over 40. They can feel overwhelming, confusing, and even intimidating. The noise, the crowds, the lack of personalization—it’s enough to make anyone give up before they even get started.
Most trainers in those environments train you the same way they train themselves. If they come from a CrossFit background, you’ll be trained like a CrossFitter. If they’re bodybuilders, you’ll be trained like a bodybuilder. It’s not their fault—it’s simply what they know.
The problem?
That approach doesn’t work anymore after 40.
There’s a reason you don’t want to work with just any trainer when you’re looking to get back in shape later in life. Many trainers rely on one-size-fits-all programs, regardless of age, experience, injuries, or physical limitations. Young or old, beginner or experienced—you’re handed the same “off-the-shelf” workout.
And while it’s rarely intentional, the truth is most trainers simply haven’t been educated on how the body changes after 40.
